Tom Savage sets career marks, but wanted W more

Posted Dec 3, 2017

Tom Savage set a career high for passing yards, but was disappointed in the outcome of the game.

Tom Savage passed for 365 yards.

He did so with an offensive line that had saw it's usual starting right guard playing left tackle.

His head coach and teammates said he played a good game.

He also saw a tight end, a running back and two receivers exit the contest because of injury.

He was evaluated for a concussion.

But Savage didn't care about numbers, or excuses for losing, in the aftermath of a 24-13 defeat at Tennessee.

"No one really cares," Savage said. "You could tell everyone in the world that we had injuries. No one cares."

Savage and the Texans took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter when he drilled a 4-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Anderson. He and the Texans had a chance to take a late lead until he was picked off in the end zone with 1:08 remaining.

He saw the offense get decimated by injuries, as tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz, receiver Braxton Miller and running back Alfred Blue all were evaluated for concussions, while receiver Bruce Ellington left with a hamstring injury.

It meant the likes of Anderson, and newly-signed running back Andre Ellington, along with receiver Chris Thompson, saw their reps increase on offense.

"It was a weird game," Savage said. "I've never been a part of something like that, with that many guys out. Those guys really stepped up and did a great job for us."

Right tackle Breno Giacomini, was complimentary of Savage's efforts.

"He played well," Giacomini said. "To go back out there with the guys going down, it's tough, win or lose."

Savage completed 31-of-49 passes for 365 yards, and had the Texans in position to win at the end.

"I thought he played well," O'Brien said. "Tom can sling it. We had a lot of injuries today. A lot of things we had to piece together on offense."

But again, Savage wasn't impressed with the stats.

"It's just numbers," Savage said. "We've got to find a way to win. I'd rather be 1-of-50, and with a win, than whatever yards I had."

Savage and the Texans will host the 49ers next Sunday at NRG Stadium.
