Meet Coach Audrey Phillips | Coach of the Week

Week 3

School: Dulles High School

Years Coaching: 3

How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? College\university you attended?

  • This is my third-year coaching. I started at Incarnate Word Academy coaching volleyball and basketball before moving to Dulles where I coach volleyball, soccer, and girl's flag football. I graduated from the University of Houston with a BS in Sports Administration and a minor in Health.

Why do you coach?

  • When I was in high school, we had a Powder Puff game where the juniors would play the seniors in girls flag football. This sparked my interest because I grew up watching NFL games with my dad and brother. I remember being 6 years old throwing Hail Mary's in the street with my neighbors having the time of my life. When I had the opportunity to coach it, I knew I had to step up to the challenge since football has always been such a special part of my life. It has been such a fun process so far with the most incredible girls!

What is the most rewarding\fulfilling part of your job?

  • The most rewarding part of this job is seeing the growth in the kids both in and outside their sport. Month to month, you get to watch these kids develop and start to change into such amazing people. Knowing that I get to play a small role in shaping these young kids lives is incredible.

In your opinion, what is the significance of the growth of girl's flag football?

  • Not only is girl's flag football empowering young girls, but it is showing them a world of new opportunities. 5 years ago, barely anyone knew about flag football leagues for young girls. Now, you have some colleges recognizing the sport. There is nothing that girls in this world can't do, and I think that this program is proving that.
