Meet Coach De Vincent Idlebird | Coach of the Week

Week 3

School: Heights High School

Years Coaching: 24

How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? College\university you attended?

  • My coaching career began 24 years ago at Furr High School in Houston ISD as an Assistant Football Coach. Since then, I have expanded my coaching to Ladies' Soccer where I serve as the Head Coach at Heights High School. I received my undergraduate degree at Texas Southern University; followed by master's degrees at Prairie View A&M University and the University of Houston.

Why do you coach?

  • Many of the lessons I learned in life were given to me by the opportunity to participate in competitive athletics. Teamwork, sacrifice, how to win AND lose properly, being committed are just a few of the character traits that enhanced my development along the way. There are so many more. When the opportunity presented itself to coach girls flag football it was a no-brainer. It's a rapidly growing sport that gives young ladies another chance to showcase their talents, provide a challenging experience, build self-esteem, and have fun through physical activity. More importantly, I get to coach on sport's fastest, rising platform called Girls' Flag Football. Truly grateful!

What is the most rewarding\fulfilling part of your job?

  • Being a witness to the transformation of athletes, male or female, accomplishing their goals, persevering, building relationships, and their enjoyment is a rewarding experience not taken for granted.

In your opinion, what is the significance of the growth of girl's flag football?

  • The opportunity and exposure of flag football has made a significant difference in the growth of the game for the girls. The game allows the girls to exhibit dominance through a developed skill set instead of pure strength. I look forward to remaining a part of this dynamic for the future.
