Physically, I feel great. I’m bigger, I’m faster, I’m stronger. I feel very fluid and loose on the field. Justin Reid
After a Sunday off for players, the Houston Texans were back on the practice field Monday morning. It was the last day of training camp before the pads come on for Tuesday's work day.
"The last time we practiced, offensively, we were a little inconsistent," head coach David Culley said after Monday's practice. "Today, we were a lot more consistent than we have been, especially in our team periods and that's what you want to see during training camp."
Texans season ticket members were spectators in the stands at the Houston Methodist Training Center. Culley talked to the fans before the start of practice.
In 1-on-1s between receivers, tight ends and defensive backs, both sides had some big plays.
Rookie tight end Brevin Jordan made a nice catch in coverage.
Wide receiver Anthony Miller created separation for himself on a long reception.
Defensive back Desmond King II had an impressive pass breakup.
The defense continued its streak of takeaways. Linebackers had themselves a day as Tae Davis, Hardy Nickerson and Kamu Grugier-Hill each had an interception in team drills.
"He preaches consistency, he preaches getting takeaways, getting turnovers and that's the type of defense that we want to run," Reid said of defensive coordinator Lovie Smith.
In 7-on-7s, Tyrod Taylor threw a beautiful pass to Brandin Cooks who caught the ball in stride in the middle of the field.
When quarterback Davis Mills was taking snaps, Taylor was talking to Brevin Jordan on the sideline.
Tight end Jordan Akins had another great day of work. He was hard to defend in 1-on-1 drills and again caught everything in his area code during team drills.
The weather was actually pleasant (for Houston in August, that is) for a breezy day of work. In fact, during a practice break, Justin Reid and the defensive backs paused for a mini dance party to a Gunna track that played over the speakers.
Defensive back Terrence Brooks picked up photography after his son was born and also interned at Players Tribune. Brooks hasn't had a chance to pull out the camera since he arrived in Houston though.
"As for Houston, it's been all football for me," Brooks said. "I'll get out there at some point but right now, we're all ball."
Culley rounded up the team mid-practice for a quick huddle. Players and coaches gathered around to listen to what the head coach had to say before the next period began. Culley said that the first few days of camp have been what he's expected from the team.
"I expected great effort," Culley said. "I expected the enthusiasm and I expect that from them because they know that they're going to get that from us as coaches. It's been exactly what I want."
Justin Reid said eight-year veteran Terrance Mitchell is his "favorite guy to play Cover-2 with because of what he brings.
"So far, he's my favorite guy to play Cover-2 with," Reid said. "He's just a physical corner. He's very smart, he's competitive. He'll compete on every play, man coverage, zone coverage, very enthusiastic and positive. Doesn't bring any negativity to the team, great guy."
Mitchell described wide receiver Anthony Miller as "Quick, real quick" but also added that all the receivers present challenges.
The practice ended with the team singing "Happy Birthday" to Laremy Tunsil inside the huddle.
Tunsil turned 27 on Monday.
Players are excited and ready to get to work with pads on Tuesday.
"It's like the first day of school," Reid said.
