Training Camp 8/23/21: Notes and Quotes

After their 20-14 preseason win in Dallas, the Houston Texans were back at work on Monday afternoon. Training Camp presented by Xfinity was moved inside to the NRG Stadium bowl and was really more of a walkthrough so today will be more quotes and less notes than usual.

Laremy Tunsil was on the practice field, but not yet off the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Head Coach David Culley said Tunsil was present in meetings but not ready to begin practicing yet.

Tytus Howard started the preseason game at Dallas at left guard, where he made his first NFL start in Week 2 of the 2019 season at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"It felt pretty good to be out there this weekend," Tytus Howard said.

Howard said that Justin Britt has also given him advice on changing positions on the offensive line. Britt started at right tackle and right guard Seattle's offensive line before setting in at center.

Culley said that players that start the third and final preseason game on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will likely play into the third quarter.

"I want to see how we can sustain things for a whole half with basically the same guys in there when we're playing," Culley said. "We haven't don't that yet. We've had kind of a pitch count for certain guys and hopefully in this game right here, we can get a little bit more consistency in going into the second half with the same guys and seeing how the consistency develops with those guys."

Wide receiver Nico Collins is expected to practice and play in Saturday's game. Collins had a muscle pull and did not play at Dallas.

Culley said there was no update on wide receiver Anthony Miller's return. Miller injured his shoulder in the first preseason game.

In Houston's win at Dallas, Culley saw some positives but first outlined what he wanted to see improved.

"We were 0-for-10 on third down which was not acceptable and a couple of those were third-and-shorts," Culley said. "The most positive thing which has something to do with us still having a chance to win the ball game with four turnovers – we did not turn the ball over. And that was the most positive thing coming out of that game offensively."

Defensive lineman Maliek Collins says he has always placed an emphasis on winning his 1-on-1 battles when they come his way.

The Texans waived tight end Kahale Warring and released running back Darius Jackson.

Teams must trim their rosters down to 80 players by Tuesday. The deadline for final roster cuts to 53 players is Tuesday, August 31.

The Texans will return to the practice field on Tuesday at the Houston Methodist Training Center. Houston will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their final preseason game on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CDT on ABC13 and SportsRadio 610.
