The Houston Texans “Deep Steel Thunder” is a fun and entertaining 36-member musical group that performs at all Houston Texans home games and various other marketing, promotional and community outreach events sponsored by the Texans throughout the year. Members possess a strong musical background, creativity, a passion for football and must have a minimum of 4 years of marching/jazz/professional band experience and they must be able to fulfill a part-time commitment to perform at all Texans home games and various events in the community and to attend occasional rehearsals. The instrumentation for the “Deep Steel Thunder” consists of a brass section, a drum line and Latin percussion..
The “Deep Steel Thunder”, previously known as the Bull Pen Pep Band, first performed in April 2003 at the Draft Day Event. Since then, the group has performed for numerous Texans events and has thrilled thousands of Texans fans since their inception. On game day, the band has established many of its own traditions and can be seen throughout the day at many locations:
• 3-4 hours prior to kickoff you will find them marching thru the parking lots with the tailgaters
• 1 hour prior to kick-off they assemble in Budweiser Plaza for a 15-minute performance
• 45 minutes before kickoff they march up the ramps with the fans into the stadium and into their seats
• During halftime they can be found performing in two locations around the main concourse
In addition, after any winning game, the “Deep Steel Thunder” performs at what is referred to as the “5th Quarter”, another “Deep Steel Thunder” tradition, back in Budweiser Plaza immediately following the game. The “Deep Steel Thunder” will also occasionally help provide the pregame or halftime entertainment of the game.
