Meet Coach Shawn Grey | Coach of the Week

Week 5
School: Alief Taylor High School
Years Coaching: 26

How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? College\university you attended?

This is my 26th year coaching high school football.  I began my coaching career in Fort Bend at Austin High School.  Before beginning my coaching career, I attended (UTEP) Texas at El Paso on a football scholarship.

Why do you coach? (share coaching philosophy\why you decided to coach on high school level, etc.)

I chose coaching because football has been a major part of my life, and I wanted to use the game to make a positive impact on young people. I believe coaching is about more than teaching skills and preparing athletes to compete; it is about developing character, discipline, accountability, teamwork, and confidence. My goal is to help student-athletes reach their full potential both on and off the field.

What is the most rewarding\fulfilling part of your job?

I believe the most rewarding part of being a coach is building relationships that last long after a student-athlete leaves school and the final season ends. There is something deeply meaningful about watching an athlete begin with uncertainty, recognize their own potential, and gradually develop the confidence, discipline, and resilience to pursue a dream that once felt out of reach. Coaching allows me to turn possibility into progress by providing the guidance, honest feedback, and tools they need to become the person they want to be—not only as athletes, but as people. It also gives me the privilege of leading a program toward a vision that others may not yet see, then witnessing the moment when that vision becomes real through the hard work, trust, and growth of the people I coach.

In your opinion, what is the most misunderstood thing about the coaching profession?

I believe the most misunderstood thing about coaching is that it ends when practice does. There is no real checkout time. Coaching requires a willingness to sacrifice time, because the relationships you build and the moments you share with your athletes cannot be recreated or made up later.

Please share the importance of what your staff/ players are doing for your community?

Our staff and players are committed to making a positive difference in the Alief community. Their impact extends far beyond practices and games through the time, energy, and care they give to others. They serve as role models for younger students, support local events and initiatives, and demonstrate the importance of teamwork, responsibility, discipline, and service.

What makes their efforts especially meaningful is that they understand being part of a team also means being part of a community. Whether they are volunteering, encouraging local youth, helping families, or simply representing Ailey with pride and respect, they show that leadership is measured not only by what happens on the field, but also by how we treat and support others.

I am proud of the way our staff and players use their platform to build relationships, inspire young people, and contribute to the growth of Ailey. Their commitment reminds us that athletics can bring people together, create lasting connections, and help make our community stronger.
