The Houston Texans proudly present the Gridiron Heroes program, supported by American National Insurance (ANI). This initiative is dedicated to honoring and empowering service members, veterans, and their families by connecting them with opportunities filled with purpose, teamwork, and lasting relationships. Through our partnership with TASO, Gridiron Heroes provides veterans with scholarships to reintegrate into their communities by officiating sports, helping them find fulfillment and continue serving in new ways. The Houston Texans continue to innovate Salute to Service programming by:

  • Being the first official NFL team to pilot this initiative.
  • Address the need of the lack of officials for youth and other organized sports.
  • Providing an avenue for continued earning for veterans and active military with opportunities to officiate multiple sports, year-round.

The journey isn't over once our officials have been certified. As a part of the Gridiron Heroes program, referees will maintain connection with the Houston Texans with access to events and opportunities such as:

  • Girls Flag Jubilee
  • Senior Showcase
  • Youth Football Clinic
  • Coaches Academy

Why do they want to become a certified sports official? As a U.S. Navy veteran who served on submarines, I value structure, teamwork, and discipline. Becoming a certified sports official would let me apply those same principles in a new environment while staying active and involved in my community. I miss the camaraderie and leadership of service, and I see this as a great way to continue serving with purpose.

Why do they want to become a certified sports official? I currently coach little league football in my area of Humble. I talk with the officials regularly and they are always short handed and have a hard time filling a complete crew for some games. Of If I can help and give back to the community, I am all in.

Why do they want to become a certified sports official? Sports have always been a big part of my life, and I've learned a lot about discipline, focus, and teamwork from them just like in the military. In the Marines we were taught leadership traits and principles to stay calm under pressure, make quick and fair decisions, and hold ourselves to a higher standard, and I believe all of that directly ties into being a good official. Officiating gives me a chance to stay involved in sports, give back to the community, and apply those same values.
