Over the past few days, round-by-round, we've reviewed the Texans in the NFL Draft.
Today, we look back at their history in the 5th.
Yes, yes, we know Houston doesn't have a 5th-rounder this year. But we're going through this exercise in sequential order, so today we get the fifth.
Due to trades, Houston didn't have a 5th-round selection in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2013 or 2014. All told, they've selected 15 players in the 5th.
The most notable contributors have been T.J. Yates, James Casey, Shiloh Keo and D.J. Reader.
As a rookie quarterback in 2011, Yates came in for backup Matt Leinart at Jacksonville during Week 12. Leinart had started in place of the injured Matt Schaub, but Yates helped guide the Texans down the stretch and in the playoffs for the rest of that campaign. He was under center for the franchise's first playof victory, and also came back to the squad in 2015, helping the Texans win a trio of ballgames in November and December. Yates re-appeared in 2017, coming off the bench in Week 14 against San Francisco, and starting the final three games of the year after that.
Casey was a 2009 selection out of Rice, and wound up playing tight end and fullback in his four season with the club. Keo was a 5th-rounder out of Idaho, and the defensive back made his impact primarily on special teams.
Reader had a strong rookie campaign in 2016, and followed it up with a 2017 that saw him start the first 14 games of the season and log 47 total tackles.
