Cornerbacks a position group to watch in camp | Daily Brew

The Houston Texans are putting on the pads Friday as players make the most of their limited reps to make the 53-man roster. The cornerback group has undergone major changes in the past two years but expect the battles to continue in camp this month. Secondary coach D'Anton Lynn is excited about the experience and versatility of his group.

"I feel good," Lynn said. "It's super competitive. Like I said, there's a lot of guys that can play two different spots, so we're going to have an opportunity to have the best guys out there on the field and it might look different each week depending on the team that we're playing and depending on injuries. We have a good group of guys, young and old, that can play in the inside and the outside, and a couple of them can play safety if they have to. So, I'm excited."

The Texans re-signed starter Bradley Roby this offseason after a productive 2019 season. Roby started in 10 games in his first season with Houston and recorded 38 total tackles (35 solo), two tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, one quarterback hit, two interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown), eight passes defensed and one forced fumble.

Heading into his seventh NFL season, Roby is ready to take on a bigger leadership role, especially with the departure of Johnathan Joseph after nine seasons with Houston.

"I feel like I'm definitely the oldest guy and most experienced," Roby said. "I definitely feel like it's my job to lead the guys and lead us to be better than we have been in the past. My goal is to be a whole lot better than we've been over the past couple of years. That's my plan and I'm doing everything I can to help everyone, including the safeties as well."

Returning cornerbacks for the Texans include second-year Lonnie Johnson, returning players Gareon Conley, Vernon Hargreaves III, Keion Crossen, Phillip Gaines, Cornell Armstrong and rookie John Reid.

"I'm happy with the way our secondary is coming together," defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said. "I think D'Anton Lynn is doing a phenomenal job with each and every one of those guys."

The Texans will begin padded practices on Friday, August 14 at the Houston Methodist Training Center.
