Meet Coach Sergio Gonzalez | Coach of the Week

Week 7
School:
Sam Rayburn High School
Years Coaching: 12

How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? College\university you attended? **I began my career 12 years ago at Horace Mann Junior High in Goose Creek CISD. I attended the University of Houston and received my Bachelors of Science in Sports Management.

Why do you coach? (share coaching philosophy\why you decided to coach on high school level, etc.)
I coach because of the experience I had as a player at Galena Park High School. I was a part of a group that had the most wins since the 60's in school history. I had great coaches who motivated me and did right by me and my teammates. The brotherhood Bonds I share with my teammates are still strong to this day. I coach to make a difference for kids who maybe need the extra resource, care or guidance in life.

What is the most rewarding\fulfilling part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is when the lightbulb turns on for one of my players. Whether in football or life, seeing a kid figure it out and do right is all well worth it. Having them come back years later with the same respect and love goes a long way also.

In your opinion, what is the most misunderstood thing about the coaching profession?
The biggest misconception is that all we do is coach football. Many times we are parents, friends, counselors, providers for our kids. We check grades, wash laundry, set up the fields, clean the locker rooms all so that our kids can have a great experience.

Please share the importance of what your staff/ players are doing for your community?
**Here at Sam Rayburn we have taken pride in developing deep relationships with stakeholders in our community. We are doing our best to make sure that everyone knows who we are and what our brand is!
