Meet Coach Shaun McDowell  | Coach of the Week

Week 1
School: Grand Oaks High School
Years Coaching: 20

How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? College\university you attended?

  • I have been coaching for 20 years. My career began at Bush High School in Fort Bend ISD In 2003. I moved on to Cypress Creek High School in 2007. In 2012, I became the head football coach at Willowridge High School. In 2013, I moved on to Foster High School as the head football coach. In 2023, I became the head football coach/campus athletic director at Grand Oaks High School in Conroe ISD. I attended the United States Coast Guard Academy for college and played fullback. I have a master's degree from Lamar University.

Why do you coach? (share coaching philosophy\why you decided to coach on high school level, etc.)

  • I coach because I love to see players achieve things that they believe they can't achieve. Teaching them values such as working hard, commitment, discipline, and teamwork which will serve them throughout their lives. I love coaching at the high school level because it allows me to help mold young players to be the best versions of themselves and become great men.

What is the most rewarding\fulfilling part of your job?

  • The most rewarding/fulfilling part of my job is to see the growth and development of young men on and off the field. I understand that I have the ability to change a person's life and I don't take that lightly. To watch a kid grow into becoming a productive citizen in this world is amazing!*In your opinion, what is the most misunderstood thing about the coaching profession?
  • I think the most misunderstood thing about the coaching profession is the time that it takes. I don't think people understand that this is a 365 days a year type of job. You really do have to love it! Football and coaching are always on our minds. Great coaches are always growing and trying to figure out how they can get better as coaches in order to make their players better.

Please share the importance of what your staff/ players are doing for your community?

  • The Grand Oaks community is amazing! Since I got here in January 2023, they have welcomed my family and me with open arms. We are currently involved with our Little Grizzles youth football program and have put on numerous football camps for all ages during the summer months. We also put on events like Meet The Grizzlies, Decals with Dads, and our very popular Football 101 Moms Clinic.
