Meet Coach Tony Herrera | Coach of the Week

  1. How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? College\university you attended?

I have been coaching for 14 years. Immediately after graduating college, Sam Houston State University, I contacted my old high school coach, Robert Blackshear(retired). He gave me a chance as an assistant OL coach at Cy Lakes High School. From Cy Lakes I came over here, to Wisdom High School. This is my third year here, the first two years here I served as the Offensive Coordinator, and this year is my first being the Head Coach.

  1. Why do you coach? (share coaching philosophy\why you decided to coach on high school level, etc.)

I coach because I am about building strong and meaningful relationships. The ability to be able to connect with people with diverse backgrounds and upbringings is something that is very special to me. I also correlate the game of football with life. I tell my athletes all the time that in football you will deal with many challenges and obstacles, as well the highs and thrills. How you prepare, react, and can persevere through them is a great preview and indicator of what life is about. I specifically coach at the high school level because I truly believe it is the most influential time in a young man's/woman's life.

  1. What is the most rewarding\fulfilling part of your job?

To me, the most rewarding and fulfilling part of my job is to be able to see the success and improvement of everyone in the program. This is not strictly just football, it's about the growth of the character, discipline, determination, and other aspects of becoming a young man/woman.

  1. In your opinion, what is the most misunderstood thing about the coaching profession?

I don't think that many people know of all the titles that a coach has. Coaches aren't just coaches, coaches are mentors, fathers, husbands, scouts, leaders, mediators, improvisors, recruiter, and motivator just to name a few.

  1. Please share the importance of what your staff/ players are doing for your community?

Our staff and players are fully embedded in the community: Some of the programs that we are a part of are or participate in are Suits for Success, Principal's Project, YoungLife, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society, Habitat for Humanity, 3DE, and Hispanic Heritage Foundation just to name a few.
