Linebacker Joe Mays did a little yelling and inspiring of his own a few weeks ago at Arrowhead Stadium.
Against Kansas City, Mays' mini-rant was instrumental in stopping the Chiefs offense in a goal-to-go situation, according to Antonio Smith. Mays took command and pushed his teammates to action. Smith recalled the exact moment before the snap on "The Antonio Smith Show" on Texans Radio.
"He went off on us (saying), 'I'm tired of the talking and we're going to stop them.'" Smith said. "Lo and behold, we stopped them."
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has commended Mays as a vocal leader on the field. Mays has been a tremendous asset this offseason, especially in the wake of Brian Cushing's season-ending injury. The sixth-year linebacker has started all nine games this season and recorded a career-high nine tackles (five solo) in that game against Kansas City.
