Who exactly is DeMaurice F. Smith?

With all the NFL owners meeting in Dana Point talking about issues like the NFL labor deal, a name keeps popping up - DeMaurice F. Smith. But a lot of people know little about the man who recently was voted to succeed the late Gene Upshaw as executive director of the NFL Players Association.

Here are the basics. He's been a partner at a big-time Washington, DC law firm. He didn't play football beyond high school. And he's smart, wicked smart.

As the NFLPA points out, there is a lot more to know about Smith, who inherits an NFL labor deal that expires in 2010 and league-wide economic cutbacks.
