Davis talks shortly before signing

Andre Davis arrived in Houston Wednesday night. Less than 24 hours later he was a Texan.

Although Davis got started late in free agency, he made up for it by signing with the first team he visited this offseason. When he spoke to the Houston media at 11:00 a.m., Davis made no secret of the fact that he wanted to sign with Houston.

Five hours later a deal was struck giving the sixth year receiver a fresh start in a new city and giving the Texans a pass catcher with speed to stretch the defense.

Following are Davis' comments to the Houston media shortly before inking a deal with Houston Thursday afternoon.

(on the visit to Houston) "The meetings have gone great so far. This is definitely an organization that I would love to be a part of. Right now, I'm just kind of waiting and hoping everything works out upstairs. I pay my agent to get the job done, so hopefully that's what is going on right now."

(on if he would prefer to play for Houston) "It would be nice. It would be nice. It's something that I've got to go back home and speak it over with my wife and make sure that this is the best opportunity for both of us, and if it is, then hopefully we'll be back here."

(on potentially playing alongside Texans WR Andre Johnson) "I think I would be a good complement to all of the receivers in the group. I think it's a young group, and I would love to be able to bring in some type of veteran presence. A lot of people know about my speed, and I'm here to bring that and also to stretch the field and open it up for everybody else who's out there."

(on if he's visited any other teams) "I haven't visited anywhere else at this point. I'm actually going through it a little bit. My wife had a miscarriage a couple of weeks ago, so I put football on hold. It was something that, at that point in time, football was secondary. I believe in faith first, family and football, so I wanted to take care of that first. Now that we're able to move on from that, Houston was my first visit."

(on where else he may visit) "I don't know. Everything's been working out pretty well here so far, so I just want to take it one step at a time right now, and from here, we'll decide if we're going to go somewhere else."

(on his first impression of the Texans) "It was a great first impression. Just in talking with (Texans head) coach (Gary) Kubiak, (offensive coordinator) coach (Mike) Sherman, and (wide receivers) coach (Larry) Kirksey, seeing the players out there working out, seeing the facilities, it's a great organization and I think that it shows it from the top to the bottom that this can definitely be a great spot for a player. It will be nice to talk to some of these players and find out how they truly feel about it, because I know it's a recruiting trip and everything is going to sound great, so we'll see what happens over these next couple of hours or the next day."

(on if he's optimistic that a deal can be reached soon with the Texans) "I hope so. I hope they wouldn't bring me down here if they weren't interested. For me, it's just one of those things that the offseason has already started for most teams, so I want to make sure that, whether it's here in Houston or with another team, I want to try and get in there quickly so I can start to build that team chemistry up. That's what's going to get you through those tough, hot months in training camp, and to make sure that that chemistry is there so that you can build on that for the upcoming season."

(on if he knows any of the Texans coaches or players) "Actually, the only person I truly know a little bit is (Texans DE) Anthony Weaver because we played high school ball in the same area back up in upstate New York. So that's the only guy at this point in time, but I am familiar with some of the other players. Of course with (Texans WR) Andre Johnson, who went to the University of Miami and I went to Virginia Tech, so I'm definitely familiar with some of the other guys."

(on possibly joining a team with a new starting quarterback) "I think it excites me maybe a little bit more than some of the other receivers who've been here just because I know I'm coming in with somebody else new, so he's going to have to learn the stuff just as much as I'm going to have to learn the new stuff. Once again, I think it's important to get in here early enough that you can start to build that chemistry with your quarterback and just with your teammates in general so that when you get out there on the field, you know what everybody's feeling and that you guys are all moving toward the same goal."
