Why I Coach
Ashley Castro, Round Rock High School
How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? What college or university did you attend?
I have been coaching for six years, and this is my second year leading the Girls Flag Football program at Round Rock High School. My coaching journey began after I decided to transition from law enforcement to teaching law in the classroom. I have a Bachelor's degree from Texas State University and my Master's degree from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Why do you coach? Why flag football?
I coach because I want to share my passion for sports, especially flag football, with others. This sport has given me community, confidence, and purpose, and I want my athletes to experience that same joy. Coaching allows me to be a role model, helping athletes navigate the challenging, exciting, and defining moments that competition brings out in people. Flag football, specifically, is a sport where athletes discover their voice, their grit, and their confidence and I'm committed to guiding them through that journey.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of coaching is seeing my athletes succeed on and off the field. I love watching them grow as players, students, and young adults and seeing them take on whatever life brings their way. The best moments are the ones they'll remember years from now, the ones that helped shape who they become.
Why is the growth of girls flag football important to you?
The growth of girls flag football is incredibly exciting. I'm grateful that young women now have the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level and earn scholarships. Expanding this sport means expanding access, visibility, and opportunity and being part of that movement is something I take great pride in
