Week 8
School: Cinco Ranch High School
Years Coaching: 24
How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? College\university you attended?
I have been coaching for 24 years. I started in 2002 at West Memorial JH in Katy ISD. Coach Bubba Fife was an assistant athletic director and was instrumental in getting my coaching career off and running. From 2003 thru 2017 I was an assistant football coach at Cinco Ranch. In 2018 I was at Katy Taylor HS as the defensive coordinator. In 2019 I was hired as CAC/Head Coach at Cinco Ranch HS. I attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA from 1998-2002.
Why do you coach?
I knew back in college that I wanted to be a coach at the high school level. My brother was a coach and moved to Texas in 1997. As a kid, I read the book Friday Night Lights and was mesmerized by Texas HS football. I believe coaches have a great platform to push kids beyond their self-imposed limits, mentally and physically. In conjunction with their parent(s) we are able to help shape their character and help mold them into contributing members of society and eventually great husbands and fathers.
What is the most rewarding\fulfilling part of your job?
The most rewarding part of the job is the relationships with the players and coaches. Seeing teams and players develop each year into a cohesive unit is rewarding when it happens as well. Getting players to play above their capabilities is special and fulfilling.
In your opinion, what is the most misunderstood thing about the coaching profession?
The most misunderstood thing about the coaching profession is that people think it is just about the wins and losses. At the high school level in Texas, it is all about education-based athletics, sportsmanship, and becoming a team. Wins and losses can sometimes vary from year to year, but ultimately, we are coaches because we care about kids.
Please share the importance of what your staff/ players are doing for your community?
We place a high value on service within our football program and our athletic program at Cinco Ranch HS. In football, we have teamed up with Fort Bend Ramps to build ramp entrances on homes to those who can't access their home otherwise. We participate in food drives. We have visited the elderly in nursing homes. On campus we do things to honor our band, teachers, and other sports. I believe our football program can have a big influence on the Cinco Ranch community beyond the football field.
