Meet Coach Jarvis Kelley | Coach of the Week

Week 4

School: Westbury High School

Years Coaching: 19

How long have you been coaching? Where did your career begin? College\university you attended?

I have been coaching for 19 years. I began my career coaching at Dowling Middle School where I coached for 10 years. My high school coaching career started at Jack Yates High School where I coached for 2 years. The next 2 years were spent at Houston Chavez High School. I am in my fifth year here at Westbury High School and my fourth year as the Head Football Coach. I graduated from Prairie View A & M University where I played defensive back.

Why do you coach?

I coached because I have a passion for seeing young adults & student athletes reach their full potential. I learned a lot of important life lessons through sports and I would like to help others have the same opportunities that I experienced while playing sports and navigating through life.

What is the most rewarding\fulfilling part of your job?

The most rewarding part of coaching is seeing a student athlete grow and mature to become the best version of themselves.

In your opinion, what is the most misunderstood thing about the coaching profession?

The most misunderstood thing about coaching is that it is easy. Coaching can be very challenging when trying to balance your own personal life and still be there for everyone involved in your sports program.

Please share the importance of what your staff/ players are doing for your community?

My staff and I have built a relationship with local church leaders and business owners in our community. We allow neighborhood sports programs to use our facilities to host events that help bridge the gap between our school and the community.
