Sleeper of the Game presented by Mattress Firm is adapted from a pregame conversation between Marc Vandermeer and John Harris.
Marc: Dalton Schultz - Tight End
With Brevin Jordan on injured reserve and the tight end room depleted, Dalton Schultz becomes a critical factor in Monday night's success. The veteran tight end, who has been with the team for three years, showed flashes against the Rams but needs to build on those moments.
Schultz must reestablish the connection with C.J. Stroud that was present in 2023 but seemed to fade in 2024. Look for him to be a reliable outlet in the short to intermediate passing game, particularly on third downs.
With defensive attention likely focused on Nico Collins and other primary receivers, Schultz has the opportunity to "leak out" and find soft spots in coverage. Three to five catches for first downs could be the difference in keeping drives alive and controlling the game's tempo.
John: Christian Harris - Linebacker
John Harris broke down why Christian Harris is his sleeper pick: "My sleeper is Christian Harris. He's got to make a play in this game. He'll be matched up from time to time on Cade Otten, I would imagine. That's going to happen in certain situations. And an opportunity for him to make a play, especially if you are able to get some pressure on Baker Mayfield. Go get that ball, Christian. Get a pick. Jar it loose. Do something. Make a big hit. I believe that this linebacking core has to shut down this run."
Harris represents the type of impact player who can change the complexion of the game with one decisive moment. The linebacker corps as a whole carries the responsibility of forcing Tampa Bay into obvious passing situations where Houston's pass rush can take over. If the Buccaneers establish their ground attack, it opens up everything else in their offensive arsenal, making Harris and his fellow linebackers the key to defensive success.
Both players represent the type of complementary contributors who often determine the outcome of close games in prime time settings.
