In honor of the NFL's Salute to Service initiative, the Houston Texans and American National Insurance hosted service members and first responders at NRG Stadium for the first-ever Salute to Service Showdown, a flag football tournament and skills challenge that brought competition and camaraderie to the hallowed turf.
Teams representing the Army, Marines, Coast Guard, and First Responders battled through round-robin games and friendly competitions that included a long toss challenge, field goal kicking contest, and an intense tug-of-war. When the dust settled, Houston's First Responders claimed the inaugural Salute to Service Showdown Trophy as the event's first-ever champions.
American National Insurance played a vital role in making the event possible as the presenting partner. "We went to our employees and said, 'What matters to you?' That's where we want to put our charitable giving and military veteran causes are No. 1," said Scott Campbell, senior vice president and chief client officer at American National. "That's how we partnered with the Texans as their military community partner because it's important to our employees, so it's important to us."
The participants were coached by Texans rookies and defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr., who has been nominated for a Salute to Service award, alongside Texans Legends Chris Clark, Glover Quin, Jim Herndon, and Travis Johnson. TORO joined in as a special guest referee, adding to the festive atmosphere as families of all teams were invited to watch the action and enjoy lunch together.
"It meant a lot just to be able to give back to them, just giving them our time for everything they do for us, a lot of the unseen things that they do so we can have our freedoms and things like that," said Texans wide receiver Jaylin Noel. "It was super cool just to be able be to be out there with them. There was some talent out there. There was some double moves, motions before the snap. So, these guys knew what they were doing."
