Texans score on opening drive, take early lead at Jacksonville

A second chance on their first drive gave the Texans just what they needed to start the day in Jacksonville.

On the 15th play of their first possession, QB Davis Mills connected with WR Brandin Cooks for a 22-yard score, and the Ka'imi Fairbairn extra point staked the Texans to a 7-0 advantage with 6:39 left in the first quarter.

Things got off to a rocky start for Mills and company. The Jaguars defense forced a punt after a three-and-out to begin the game. During the punt, however, Jacksonville's Adam Gotsis committed a hand to the face penalty and knocked Erik Murray's helmet off. The Texans were awarded five yards and a first down, and the offense went back to work.

Houston would pick up five first downs, converting all four of their subsequent third-down tries, as Mills completed 6-of-7 passes for 53 yards. Cooks' 22-yard touchdown was his third catch on the drive and he picked up 33 yards in the early going. In six career games against Jacksonville, including a 2017 postseason contest, Cooks has scored in four of those matchups.

The Texans ran eight times on the possession and picked up 22 yards.
