Zgonina in the fold?

EDITOR'S NOTE:About 10 minutes after I wrote this blog below, Zgonina returned my phone call and confirmed that he had joined the team. Click here for the full story from my colleague, Carmine Pirone.

It has been reported in several news outlets, such as ESPN.com and NFL.com, that the Texans have signed free agent veteran defensive tackle Jeff Zgonina, who visited with Texans officials last week.

There's been no official word yet out of Reliant Stadium, but we're working to get verification on the news. I tried calling Zgonina's cell phone number a few minutes ago, and he didn't pick up, so the verdict is still out.

Chances are that the other news outlets received word from Zgonina's agent about the signing. Per the official editorial policy of HoustonTexans.com, we do not report anything that isn't official. But we'll be sure to pass along the news as soon as we receive it.

In the meantime, stay tuned for further updates. Free agent linebacker Shawn Barber, formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, will be in Houston on Thursday and Friday to meet with coaches and front office personnel. If he signs with the team, Barber will be the second free agent linebacker to join the Texans this offseason, in addition to Danny Clark. **
