Ed Reed back with Texans for mini-camp, continuing rehab

Safety Ed Reed has re-joined the Texans this week for their mandatory three-day mini-camp.

Reed had surgery on April 30 in Vail, Colo., for a labral tear in his hip. He spent the next four weeks there before continuing his rehab in Atlanta, where he keeps an offseason home. He returned to Houston on Sunday, almost three months after signing as an unrestricted free agent on March 22.

"It's going well right now," Reed said Tuesday about his recovery. "There's really no timeline. I know what I want and I know what we want as an organization. We're just gonna keep on grinding and keep on working and shoot for September."

Reed is not practicing this week. The nine-time Pro Bowler worked out separately Tuesday with the rest of the Texans' starters and key veterans who are excused from practice during mini-camp as coach Gary Kubiak takes a look at young players.

Addressing a throng of media on the field at the Methodist Training Center after finishing his Tuesday workout, Reed did not reveal an exact goal for his return date. The Texans hope he can return by the beginning or middle of training camp.

"My goals are simple," Reed said. "My goal was to be part of this organization that welcomed me, that wanted me, that respected what I did, knows what I've done on the football field and what I'm capable of doing. Yeah, I'm older, but I'm still gonna give everything I have to give to this sport and this organization. I made promises that I intend to keep.

"My goal is New York. And I think everybody knows that, because that's the ultimate goal at the end of the day. It's not San Diego, it's not Baltimore, it's not New England, it's not the Colts. It's New York. And I'm talking about Super Bowl. That's my goal, and our goal."

Reed, 34, said Tuesday that he thinks the injury was caused by a kick from New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady during the AFC Championship Game in January. He went on to play in the Super Bowl and record an interception two weeks later.

Reed said he did not know he would need surgery when he signed with the Texans in March from the Baltimore Ravens.

"I knew there was something there, but it didn't seem major at all," Reed said. "It was a slight tear, and we did due diligence on both sides – me, my doctor, Kap (Texans head athletic trainer Geoff Kaplan) and the head doctor here. We all put our heads together to make the best decision, and that (surgery) was the best decision."

Three years ago, Reed had reconstructive hip surgery that caused him to start the 2010 on the Physically Unable to Perform list. He called his April surgery a "minor procedure" in comparison, adding, "I definitely feel a lot different than I felt last time."

"We're going to keep working out this offseason, and once training camp comes, I'll have a better beat on it as far as my progress," Reed said. "Right now, I could tell you it's going well, going really good. No setbacks. It's looking really good right now."
