Emptied Notebook: Day 5 of Texans Training Camp

*

The following is a random assortment of quotes, oddities, scattershots and interesting tidbits from Tuesday at Texans Training Camp presented by XFINITY.

**-5,219 fans attended the morning practice at the Houston Methodist Training Center. It was the first open practice of camp, and it was outside.

-The rookie receivers were impressive in the red zone during the morning practice. DeAndre Hopkins caught a touchdown over the middle and drew cheers from the crowd. Undrafted free agent Alec Lemon elicited "oohs" and "ahhs" from the crowd when he pulled in a touchdown with just his left arm. He was covered very well by Roc Carmichael, but Stephen McGee's pass was right in the bucket for Lemon to grab.

-University of Houston defensive coordinator David Gibbs and some of his assistants took in practice from the sidelines. Gibbs was the Texans' defensive backs coach in 2009 and 2010.

-Tight end Garrett Graham returned to the practice field, but was not in pads. Graham missed the first four days of training camp with a virus.

-The team worked outside for the entirety of the morning practice. The first four days were split between the inside and outside. Around 9:20, the offensive and defensive linemen, along with the linebackers, peeled off their shoulder pads for the final 40 minutes of the 2-hour practice.

-Nose tackle David Muir made a few plays on defense that would've likely been tackles for loss.

-Pro Football Hall of Famer and Texans Ambassador Kenny Houston watched practice as well.

-Fullback Greg Jones played his college ball at Florida State. The Texans' 2005 first round draft pick was defensive lineman Travis Johnson, a teammate of Jones with the Seminoles. Johnson was on the sidelines watching today, and spoke with Jones afterwards.

-In the afternoon, the Texans practiced inside the Houston Methodist Training Center.

-New Texans linebacker Joe Mays attended the afternoon practice in street clothes. He signed with the team Tuesday. Mays will wear jersey number 53. Linebacker Mike Mohamed switches from 53 to 49.

-Linebackers Willie Jefferson and Sam Montgomery each wore Texans knit stocking caps.

-After the work inside, Hopkins, Lemon, wide receivers DeVier Posey, Jeff Maehl and Lestar Jean, along with tight end Owen Daniels took turns catching tennis balls from the machine.
