McNair received an honorary SPUR Award from the Girl Scouts before hopping on a horse and cutting a ribbon at the center's entrance. The McNair Foundation's capital and endowment gift of $1 million was instrumental in the construction of the equestrian center, which includes a barn complex, riding arenas and 42 horses.

"It's quite a thrill to be here and to be riding a horse," McNair said. "The Girl Scouts have always been a big part of our lives. I was a scout leader for my oldest daughter and had 22 Brownies at my house on Tuesday afternoons.

"Scouting for girls and boys offers so many valuable experiences that make life more meaningful. We are very happy to support this."

The Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is the state's largest, serving more than 58,000 girls and 14,000 adults in 21 east and southeast Texas counties.
