Texans quarterback T.J. Yates was honored by the City of Houston, the Lone Star Veterans Association, and the Wounded Warrior Project for his dedication to returning veterans at City Hall on Friday morning. Yates, Houston Mayor Annise Parker and representatives from both veteran outreach organizations were in attendance to recognize Yates' community service.
The backup quarterback has been a fervent supporter of local returning veterans and wounded soldiers over the past two seasons, donating ten tickets to military personnel for each home game.
"It's an awesome recognition for helping these guys," Yates said. "They've done so much to help every single one of us. I can't thank everybody enough, Mayor Parker, the Texans, LSVA and the Wounded Warrior Project for making this possible."
Mayor Parker proclaimed Jan. 31 "T.J. Yates Day" while presenting the Texan with a framed plaque commending his service. Both the Wounded Warrior Project and LSVA also awarded Yates with mementos in appreciation of his support.
Yates views his contribution more as a privilege, another way to say thank you to the many men and women that serve and protect our country.
"If giving some tickets to a couple football games so they can come back and have some camaraderie, check out a football game and get their mind away from what they've done overseas or in this country is more than my pleasure, and I'm very glad to do it."
