The Texans have signed quarterback Matt Schaub to a contract extension.
Schaub, whose contract was set to expire after this season, reportedly signed a four-year extension through 2016 worth $62 million with $24.75 million guaranteed. The Texans do not release particulars of their contracts.
The deal was announced after Schaub went 20-of-31 for 266 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' Week 1 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Schaub started his postgame press conference by thanking Texans chairman and CEO Bob McNair, executive vice president/general manager Rick Smith and head coach Gary Kubiak.
"I'm excited to continue my career here in Houston and finish my career here," Schaub said. "We have a tremendous organization, an owner that really cares about us as players and providing an environment to win, and I am extremely excited about that."
Schaub, 31, was acquired via trade from the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. He missed the final six games of last season with a Lisfranc injury in his right foot. Before he was injured, he led the Texans to a 7-3 record and ranked second in the AFC behind Tom Brady in passer rating (96.8) and yards per attempt (8.5). He led the AFC this preseason with a 113.3 passer rating.
"I'm glad to see him receive that," All-Pro wide receiver Andre Johnson said of Schaub's new contract. "I think that he really deserves it. I think a lot of times, he doesn't get the credit that he deserves."
Entering Sunday's victory over the Dolphins, Schaub ranked seventh in NFL history in completion percentage (64.3) and 10th in passer rating (92.2). Since taking over as the Texans' starter, he ranks in the top 10 in the NFL in passer rating, passing yards, completion percentage, completions and passes of 25-plus yards. Schaub made the Pro Bowl in 2009 after leading the league with 4,770 passing yards. He threw for 4,370 yards in 2010.
Smith has a policy of not negotiating contracts during the season, so Schaub would have played the entire year without a long-term deal if one was not done this weekend.
"At no point was it ever going to be a distraction for me, (but) I'm excited for it to be done and over with so that every ounce of focus and energy can be directed to this season and what we have going and not being out there as something down the road," Schaub said. "I'm very excited to continue to make Houston our home. My wife and are raising our kids here, so we're very excited to continue to be a part of this community."
The Texans also signed defensive end Tim Jamison to a contract extension on Sunday. Undrafted out of Michigan in 2009, Jamison set career-highs in 2011 with 16 games played, two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 19 tackles and two passes defensed. He had a sack and pass defensed in the fourth quarter against Miami on Sunday.
"Timmy is playing really well," Kubiak said. "Life is good with Timmy. He's a new dad. Good things going on for Tim Jamison. I'm really proud of him. He's turning into a heck of a player."
