Tom Savage details plan for next 5 weeks

Tom Savage has a plan.

Minicamp is over and five weeks now separate the Texans from their next organized practice as a full squad. Training camp begins on July 26th at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. For Savage, the gulf between minicamp and training camp is important.

"I'm going to get some of the guys together, we're going to throw and kind of just keep moving forward," Savage said on Wednesday. "We can't plateau here. Go into training camp running."

The fourth-year quarterback came off the bench to guide the Texans to a Week 15 win last season, and then started the final two contests of the year. He wants to capitalize on the time available to him over the course of the next month, for a variety of reasons.

"Those are the rules and we'll find a way to get out there and throw and bond," Savage said. "It's more than on the field. It's off the field; we have to hang out, we have to be around each other. That's a huge key this offseason."

Head coach Bill O'Brien was impressed with how Savage commanded the offense in organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp.

"He has thrown for I think 66 percent in the spring here – which I know it's OTAs, no pads," O'Brien said. "I know relative to OTAs that's a pretty good percentage with the team and the seven-on-sevens. He's executed well, I think the big thing is it's not necessarily as much getting better, it's say now the pads are on, how do you perform in the practices, in the games, getting better every single day. That's kind of what I look for."

Savage is looking forward to the sessions to come over the next month, and said there's a shared hunger to improve by him and his pass-catchers.

"We have a great group of guys, a bunch of good leaders that all want to get better, and I know it's not going to be pulling teeth for them to get out there and work with us," Savage said. "It's going to be a fun offseason and I'm really excited for training camp."
