Brooks Reed's role in Romeo Crennel's defense may change with the addition of first-overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney at outside linebacker. It doesn't seem to surprise Reed, who says the topic of moving him inside has come up for the past three years.
"Obviously, we drafted some talent and the coaches will adapt to switching the players as need be," Reed said Monday. "From the beginning, I've been preparing to play inside backer if I had to so I'm ready if I do, I'll play outside if they need me to play outside."
Last year, Reed played inside linebacker during OTAs but returned to outside once training camp was underway. Whitney Mercilus and Reed have been the starting outsidelinebackers, at the weak and strong side spots, respectively.
On Monday, at the 12th Annual Houston Texans Charity Golf Classic, Reed talked about making the transition from outside to inside linebacker.
"They are pretty different positions in the 3-4 (defense), that is," Reed said. "But it's something that I can do and that I've done in the past minimally but it's something that I'm up for if that happens."
If Reed does finally make the move for good to inside linebacker, he feels confident under the supervision of Crennel and Mike Vrabel, the former All-Pro linebacker-turned-position coach.
"They are pretty tremendous," Reed said of Crennel and Vrabel. "They know a lot about the game. Not only that, they are great teachers of the game as well and they just want the players to learn and hold us responsible."
