The Texans signed two rookie tryouts on Tuesday, wide receiver Lacoltan Bester and defensive end Julius Warmsley. Both impressed during the three-day rookie minicamp, which wrapped up on Sunday, and earned themselves a free agent NFL contract.
Bester, 6-3, 208 pounds, spent two seasons with Oklahama but did not become a starter until 2013. He finished his collegiate career with 30 receptions, 421 yards, and two touchdowns, averaging 14.0 yards per catch in 24 games. The Scooba, Mississippi native signed with Oklahoma in May 2012 after putting up stellar numbers at East Mississippi Community College.
Bester, who started seven games in 2013, caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in the Sooners' 45-31 Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama.
"The impression he made, catching nearly everything near him, bought him the rest of the summer and potentially a practice squad spot," John Harris wrote of the newest wide receiver.
Warmsley, 6-2, 296 pounds, also received a good share of reps during minicamp. Third-round draft pick Louis Nix III missed practice Saturday and Sunday to attend his Notre Dame graduation while sixth-round defensive end Jeoffrey Pagan was still limited due to a lingering injury from Alabama.
Warmsley was a four-year letterman at Tulane University with a career 102 tackles (61 solo), 14.5 sacks for a loss of 98 yards, and four forced fumbles in 44 games. In 2013, Warmsley earned All-Conference USA first team honors and helped the Greenwave total defense rank 26th nationally and 16th against the run.
The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native also ranked first on the Tulane track and field team in the javelin and discus events during his freshman season.
Rookies and veterans will begin OTA offseason workouts beginning May 27.
