Keenum, Savage to get "significant time" vs. 49ers

Case Keenum and Tom Savage will be the primary quarterbacks in the Texans' final preseason game against San Francisco this week.

Head coach Bill O'Brien has not yet decided if starter Ryan Fitzpatrick will see any action on Thursday night (kickoff 7 p.m. on KTRK ABC-13, SportsRadio 610) at NRG Stadium.

"Haven't determined that yet, but I would say that Case (Keenum) and Tom (Savage) will get the bulk of the reps," O'Brien said Monday.

Keenum has been the No. 2 backup behind Fitzpatrick but the rotation could change. On Sunday, head coach Bill O'Brien said Savage's game-winning touchdown drive in Denver helped close the gap in the backup quarterback competition. Through three preseason games, Savage is 11-of-14 for 90 yards, one touchdown, and a 78.6 completion percentage. Keenum has completed 20-of-35 passes for 184 yards, and one interception.

The preseason finale, for both quarterbacks, is an important one, according to O'Brien.

"I've been in situations, you know, like this where two guys are really competing," O'Brien said. "In New England a lot of times the guy that played well in the fourth game, he ended up being the number two guy. But I think conceptually you always look at the body of work and then you determine within that body of work how they played in those games and in those practices and you try to add it up that way. This is an important game for everybody that's going to play in the game."
