Kubiak: Walter has "bad bruise," not broken shoulder

Texans wide receiver Kevin Walter will miss at least a few days after injuring his collarbone against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Several national reports after the game said that Walter had a broken shoulder and would be out as long as 10-12 weeks.

"He does not have a fracture," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said on Monday. "It's being treated as a bad bruise right now, and we should know more here in a couple days.

"He's obviously going to probably miss a few days, and we'll see where he's at middle of the week, end of the week, but he does not have a fracture, so that's good news."

Kubiak has not yet ruled out Walter, the Texans' No. 2 receiver, for next week's game at Miami. If he can't play, the Texans would be down to three receivers – Andre Johnson, Jacoby Jones and Bryant Johnson, who signed with the Texans late in the preseason.

Kubiak said that the Texans will work out free agent wide receivers on Tuesday. They also could consider practice squad receiver Jeff Maehl, an undrafted rookie from Oregon.

"It's something we've got to take a look at," Kubiak said. "If all of a sudden we're here Wednesday and we think Kevin's going to be fine, we maybe can continue to survive another week. We'd like to have at least four of them healthy going into each week, so we'll see."

Jones would move into the No. 2 role if Walter misses any time. The fifth-year pro had three catches for 43 yards and a 79-yard punt return touchdown against the Colts.

"He played a good 35, 36 plays for us," Kubiak said. "He was productive not only special teams-wise but offensively, and that's a big positive for us moving forward. I told y'all he's gotten better. He's been better in this camp than he has been in any previous year, so I'm hoping it equates to him playing as good as he's played as a pro. It was a good step forward for him."
