Last leg of kicking competition

With the final rosters taking place on Saturday, August 30, head coach Bill O'Brien did not offer up who is currently ahead in the kicking battle, Randy Bullock or undrafted rookie Chris Boswell.

Both Bullock and Boswell will get opportunities to kick in the Texans' preseason finale against the San Francisco 49ers this Thursday. At the team luncheon on Tuesday, O'Brien was asked if Bullock was in the lead.

"You know, that's something, again, we have to discuss," O'Brien said. 'I would say were not really sure on that yet. I would tell you that Boswell will definitely kick in the game and probably punt in the game also. I also say that Randy, I'm sure will have a certain amount of kicks in the game too."

Bullock had the edge, according to O'Brien, heading into last week's preseason game at Denver.

"I'd say Randy (Bullock) is in the lead," O'Brien said after practice on August 21. "Randy has made some good kicks. He kicked decently in the game last week and made a game winner out here today, so I'd say he's in the lead right now."

In the Texans 18-17 preseason win in Denver, Bullock kicked a 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. All three of his kickoffs were touchbacks. Boswell placed four of his six punts inside Denver's 20-yard line, averaging 41.2 yards per punt. His only kickoff of the game was a touchback.

Through three weeks in the preseason, Bullock is 2-of-2 for field goals from 40 and 24 yards. Boswell is 1-of-1 from 33 yards that he made against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2 of the preseason.

The Texans will host San Francisco in their final preseason game on Thursday with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. on KTRK ABC-13 and SportsRadio 610.
