Rookie Diary: TE Ryan Griffin, Entry #4

The Texans took Ryan Griffin![](/team/roster/ryan-griffin/c25b1964-ffbf-424b-b3a8-7fc4684b2cec/ "Ryan Griffin")internal-link-placeholder-1], a tight end from the University of Connecticut, in the sixth round of the 2013 Draft. Griffin, a 23-year old originally from Londonderry, New Hampshire is now second on the tight end depth chart behind <a class=Garrett Graham![" title="Garrett Graham" />!. Earlier this week, he shared with HoustonTexans.com about his recent experiences.

On Sunday night against the Colts, I got my first start. I only knew it the day before. My family came down and got to see that, so it was just adding that to the milestones.

Actually, it was my girlfriend's family. It was good just to have friends and family around to see that. I saw them before. it's unlike college where you got a lot of free time before the game. You get to take care of them. We went out to Top Golf before the game and it was a good time. I showed them around Houston.

Glad I got that one out of the way, and now it's time for my first touchdown. But there's a lot I've got to work on. I'm still learning. It's going to take a while but I just got to work on everything from getting the weight back on to focusing on my technique. There's nothing I can't work on right now.

I was on the field for the first touchdown pass from Case Keenum to Andre Johnson, and that was an unbelievable play. 'Dre made a spectacular adjustment to the ball. That the way things go with Case. You never know what he's going to do back there, and he threw one up and 'Dre came back down with it. it was fun to be on the field for that one, for sure.

As the first half ended, we were all running into the locker room. I was ahead with the coaches because the coaches need to get in there and start game planning. Usually Coach Kubiak is the one

running the whole halftime show for us, especially on offense. Everybody said "Trainer, trainer!," and we were all looking around. Kubs didn't come out so we assumed it was him. It was just weird.

Mr. McNair came down and told us Wade Phillips was going to take over. It was definitely uncharted water for me. I had never experienced anything like that. It was kind of scary. But we refocused on the game. We didn't see it in here, and the fact that the whole crowd saw it and it was on TV, I just feel bad for everybody watching that. It's got to be a scary thing. I've never been a part of a long losing streak like this. A lot of guys in this locker room haven't been losing like this for a long time. We've just got to focus on getting back to it. I know it sounds like a broken record, but it's what you've got to do in this league. Hopefully we turn things around, hold on to the ball, play penalty free and make some plays.
