Fourth-round draft pick Trevardo Williams is adjusting to his new position as outside linebacker and getting comfortable in the two-point stance. As a defensive end at Connecticut, Williams is learning to read plays and not just execute them.
"The hardest thing is just reading the offensive adjustments and getting familiar with certain keys and recognizing, using your eyes more often. In d-line, you just have your responsibility and you attack. A linebacker is more like reading your keys, using your eyes, and breaking down the plays."
Over his college career, Williams recorded 30.5 sacks for minus-190 yards, the sixth-best in Big East conference history. He also logged 134 tackles (85 solos), three deflected passes, one fumble recovery, and produced five others. His speed caused nine quarterback pressures at Connecticut and he hopes he can produce similar results with the Texans.
"By the season, I believe I can come in on third downs and pass rush because I will give my all to the team and I believe I have the rushing speed to make sacks," Williams said Saturday.
In addition to third down situations, Williams may also be utilized on the special teams unit. Under Joe Marciano, Williams was taking part in kickoff and punt coverage drills in Friday's afternoon training camp practice. The outside linebacker has experience on special teams units.
"I know I can do kickoff. That was my specialty in college."
Williams will be competing for a spot behind Whitney Mercilus, who is now a starter with the departure of Connor Barwin. Third-round pick Sam Montgomery and third-year veteran Bryan Braman are also for increased playing time Barwin's departure. Williams says the veteran linebackers are a useful resource for rookies like himself.
"I speak to Mercilus about eating habits," said Williams. "Brooks (Reed) teaches me about hand placement. Braman teaches me about special teams so there is every guy for everything."
Whatever his role is, Williams is eager to do his part.
"If I am given the chance, I will be happy to take it."
Texans training camp continues through Monday, August 19 at the Houston Methodist Training Center.
