Jadeveon Clowney pushes through for big day

The Texans bounced back with a XX-XX divisional win against Tennessee Titans at NRG Stadium. After an early 14-0 start in the first quarter, Houston never trailed, but was tied or within one score for the remaining three quarters of the game.
Houston's defense, without J.J. Watt for the first time since Week 17 of the 2010 season, faced Marcus Mariota for the first time in the series matchup. Mariota was limited to just 13 completions on 29 attempts, 192 yards passing and one interception. DeMarco Murray rushed for 95 yards on 25 carries and scored both Titan touchdowns.
Jadeveon Clowney, who started opposite defensive end opposite Christian Covington, had two tackles, one for a loss, one sack, and two quarterback hits. Brian Cushing returned to the starting lineup after suffering a sprained MCL in the first quarter of Week 1 and finished with four tackles.
Brock Osweiler was 25-of-37 for 254 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Rookie Will Fuller V led the receivers with seven catches with 81 yards receiving. Fuller scored two touchdowns, one on offense and the other on a 67-yard punt return. Lamar Miller had 19 carries for 82 yards rushing and also caught 3-of-3 passes for 26 yards.
The Texans opened the game with scoring drives on their first three possessions to take a 17-3 lead over the Titans. After struggling to find the endzone in Week 3, Osweiler responded with touchdown passes to C.J. Fiedorowicz and Fuller on the first two drives. Houston's offense recorded 178 net yards in the first quarter and tied a franchise-high 10 first downs in its fast start.
Osweiler led the offense on a third scoring drive to start the second quarter. Nick Novak, 2-of-3 on the day, successfully kicked a 53-yard field goal.
The Titans responded with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, both scoring runs by DeMarco Murray. Quintin Demps picked off Mariota in the second quarter to give Houston possession at its 41-yard line, but the Texans turned it over on the next play. Brock Osweiler's pass, intended for DeAndre Hopkins, was picked off by cornerback Jason McCourty. Murray rushed for his second touchdown on the ensuing drive. The Texans and Titans were tied 17-17 with 2:32 left in the first half.
Novak added a 45-yard field goal with 0:11 remaining and the Texans took a 20-17 lead heading into halftime.
Ryan Succop kicked a 26-yard field goal to cap off a drive that took 7:56 off the clock in the third quarter. Osweiler threw his second interception of the day on Houston's following possession, but the Titans were unable to convert the takeaway into points. On the ensuing punt return, Fuller displayed his speed on a 67-yard return for a touchdown. The Texans took a 27-20 lead with 1:12 left in the third quarter.
With the win, the Texans improve to 3-1 on the season and will head to Minnesota to face the Vikings in Week 5. Jadeveon Clowney was not pleased with himself.

After getting flagged for being offside and then for a neutral zone infraction on same drive early in third quarter, Clowney knew he had some ground to cover.

"They told me to let it go but I was mad," Clowney said. "I jumped offsides twice and I was really upset about it. I was like, just let it go and keep playing. Well, I got a lot of game left. Got to keep playing and try to make a play for my team."

That drive ended in a 26-yard field goal to tie the game 20-20 with 7:04 left in the third quarter. The Titans seemed to be gaining momentum after an interception on Brock Osweiler ended the next drive and gave Tennessee a chance to take the lead.

But Clowney had other plans.

On first down of the ensuing defensive series, Clowney sacked Marcus Mariota for a loss of six yards. Two plays later, his tackle on tight end Delanie Walker provided a critical stop to force a three-and-out.

"The secondary did its job on the back end and we did our job up front rushing the passer," Clowney said. "It all worked together."

Clowney finished the game with two solo tackles, one tackle for a loss, two quarterback hits, and the lone sack of the day on Mariota. Houston's defense held Mariota to just 13-of-29 for 202 yards, one interception and a 54.1 passer rating in its first game without J.J. Watt, who was placed on injured reserve this week.

"We got to keep pushing forward," Clowney said. "He's a big part of our team but we can't let one guy keep us from pushing forward and trying to win games. Today we came out here and got the win and that's what we wanted to do."
