Swearinger's preseason progression and what comes next

D.J. Swearinger has adjusted his game from one extreme to another throughout the preseason.

In his first preseason game, Swearinger was questioned for missing a tackle that led to a 61-yard touchdown. One week later, he was answering questions about hitting too hard when he sustained a season-ending hit on Miami's Dustin Keller.

"As a safety, you have to deliver that punch every time you come down on the run," Swearinger said. "Or if a receiver is coming across them middle you have to deliver that punch.  It sends a message to the other team, and gets the energy going with your own team.  It is good to be able to lay a hit."

With Ed Reed undergoing the final phase of his rehabilitation, Swearinger has benefitted with a number of preseason which he feels has helped him learn the overall defensive scheme, not just his role in it.

"When we are playing dime and I'm in at free safety, I know what the d-line is doing, the linebackers and the secondary," Swearinger said. " And that is one of my goals.  To know what the entire defense is doing, not just myself.  I think playing multiple positions has helped me a lot."

The second-round pick will likely contribute on special teams and is ready to play in whatever capacity the Texans need.

"I know I am going to get a lot of special teams reps and down reps.  Whenever my number is called, I will be ready."

The Texans wrapped up their preseason and will next play on September 9 in San Diego.

"We have a little time off, but we can use it to our advantage," Swearinger said after Thursday's win at Dallas. "Get more film in.  Get more treatment.  And do a little extra.  It will be good for us."
