GM Brian Gaine addresses needs early in draft

The Texans entered the 2018 NFL Draft without a first or second-round draft pick and major needs at several key positions. Brian Gaine admits it was a "unique circumstance" for his first draft as Texans general manager.

"Twenty years of doing this, I've never had that experience before but, in a way, after yesterday it allowed us to kind of reposition ourselves and think about what's already occurred, measure the supply and demand at the positions with 32 players already gone," Gaine said Thursday. 'As the draft then evolves, looking at the supply that possibly has fallen to us and we just let the board talk to us about what our decision should be."

With three third-round picks, Houston selected Stanford safety Justin Reid with the 68th overall pick, Mississippi State offensive tackle Martinas Rankin with the 80th overall pick and University of Central Florida tight end Jordan Akins with the 98th overall pick. Gaine did not orchestrate any trades for any of the trio of picks and overall was pleased with the Texans selections on Day 2 of the NFL Draft, adding that the new additions helped improve the team both on offense and defense.

"Best player selection is when best player available does meet need and perhaps that happened for us tonight," Gaine said. "So if our process is right, it will lead us to the best decision. We feel like with the time we spent in our meetings and our preparations that tonight we theoretically did take the best available but it happened to actually fill perceivable needs for us as well."

The 2018 NFL Draft concludes on Saturday with Rounds 4 through 7. The Texans currently have five remaining draft picks:

Round 4 103rd overall
Round 6 177th overall
Round 6 211th overall
Round 6 214th overall
Round 7

222nd overall

*Compensatory picks
