For the second consecutive year, the Houston Texans and The McNair Group have been named one of Houston's Healthiest Employers by the Houston Business Journal.

Wellness in the workplace is becoming increasingly important as Houston companies strive to recruit and retain top talent. For the Houston Texans, embracing a fresh approach to wellness through multiple initiatives is a chief priority.

TexansFit, a committee that promotes health and wellness company-wide, aims at increasing employees' awareness of their own health while encouraging the modification of behaviors and choices that result in healthier lifestyles. The programs instated by TexansFit over the past year include Fresh Fruit Mondays and the Texans Step Challenge, explained Clare Alvarado, Human Resources Coordinator and member of TexansFit.

"Fresh Fruit Mondays show employees there are healthy snack options to turn to during the afternoon," said Alvarado. "The company step challenge gets kind of competitive, but it's a fun, healthy way to get motivated and be active. I think it surprised people to see how long they work at their desk without taking a break to stretch their legs."

The most recent addition to TexansFit is the reward program which tracks employees' wellness hours and rewards involvement company-wide.

"We have a great facility for wellness; you can choose from the lean line in the café, run stairs before or after work, take advantage of weight room access, and join employee group workouts," said Alvarado. "The organization really provides the tools for a successful program. We are extremely grateful for all Mr. McNair provides for us."

HBJ works with Indianapolis-based wellness technology and data research company Healthiest Employers to acknowledge the companies committed to encouraging healthy living. To do that, Healthiest Employers collects data from voluntary surveys and an online assessment tool that measures wellness programming.

The Texans and other health-conscious Houston organizations will be recognized on April 4 at a Mini-Expo and awards luncheon at Westin Oaks Hotel.
