'Dre's day could be tomorrow.
Andre Johnson, and 14 other Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists for the 2022 class, will be considered Tuesday by the selection committee. Comprised of media members, there is one representative per city with an NFL team. Because New York and Los Angeles each have two franchises, those cities each have a pair of selectors. In all, there are 49 people on the committee, with 17 at-large selectors who are "active members of the media or persons intricately involved in professional football, including one representative of the Pro Football Writers of America."
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle is the representative for Houston.
Johnson caught 1,062 passes for 14,185 yards and 70 touchdowns in his 14-year career. His final two seasons were spent in Indianapolis and Tennessee. With the Texans, he logged three years with more than 1,500 receiving yards, and a fourth season with 1,400 yards. He officially retired with the Texans in 2017, and in November of that year he was the first person to go into the team's Ring of Honor.
The selection committee will meet virtually tomorrow, and according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame website, "there is a vote that reduces the Modern-Era Finalists list from 15 to 10. Following that, a vote is taken to reduce the list from 10 to five names. The five remaining Modern-Era Finalists for Hall of Fame election are then voted on individually (yes or no) for membership."
The finalists will be announced at the NFL Honors show, which is the Thursday before the Super Bowl, on February 10.
This is the first year Johnson is eligible. He retired from the NFL in 2016.
