The NFL announced today that wide receiver Jacoby Jones was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 6, capturing the award for the first time in his young career. With Jones' award, Houston has had 12 players win AFC Player of the Week honors in team history - one on offense, three on defense and eight on special teams.
{QUOTE}Jones (6-2, 207) returned a punt for 70 yards for his first NFL touchdown in Sunday's 29-28 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The return came at a crucial point in the second quarter and helped spark the Texans towards their first win of the season.
"It means a lot to the team," coach Gary Kubiak said. "The kid just needed to make a play to get all that swagger back he had a year ago. I think you're going to see him move on and excel."
Jones' 70-yard return was the second-longest career punt return. He is averaging 13.3 yards per return through six games this season, which ranks eighth in the NFL. The touchdown return marked the second in team history. Wide receiver Avion Black was the first Texans player to register a punt return for a touchdown with his 76-yard return against Baltimore in 2002 on his way to the first AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award in Texans history.
This is the first NFL honor this season for the Texans. Houston finished the 2007 season with a team-record five AFC individual awards. Three players won weekly awards and two were named AFC player of the month.
