Entering his third season with the Texans, Kendall Lamm has big opportunity in front of him. With Derek Newton out for the season, Houston's offensive line needs a starting right tackle.
The circumstances may be vastly different this year for Lamm, but his approach remains the same.
"I come out here every day and no matter if I was the second man, third man, it really doesn't matter," Lamm said Wednesday to Texans TV. "I take the approach of trying to be ready at all times because you never know when your time is going to be called on. I mean, I've taken that approach since college."
Lamm, who played left tackle at Applachian State during his collegiate career (2011-14) served as a reserve offensive lineman in his past two seasons with Houston. The 6-6, 305-pound offensive lineman often lined up as an extra tight end and even contributed on special teams last year and saw action in 15 games last year.
Now, Lamm has his goals cut out for him in camp. He hopes to work chemistry with his fellow offensive linemen during these next few weeks of camp at The Greenbrier, especially once full pads are on in practice.
"Of course getting on the same page with whoever is there," Lamm said. "I mean, I'm right tackle playing with Jeff Allen mostly and just me and Jeff getting on the same page, forming our own way of communicating. With the offensive line, we have our set way but I just want to get to the point where I can look at him and we know what we're doing."
Newton, placed on Reserve/PUP and rehabbing from a double knee injury suffered last season, traveled with the team to The Greenbrier and watched practice on Wednesday. Lamm said he often checks with the veteran right tackle for advice on his game.
"Newt's played this game at a high level at right tackle and if I'm seeing things through his set of eyes, I mean him being that successful, then it's only going to help me," Lamm said. "Of course, when we do 1-on-1's, I'll ask him about the set, I'll ask him about what he thought about the rush so I can pick his brain because it would be crazy not to. I mean, he is D. Newt after all."
The Texans continue with Day 2 of training camp at The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center on Thursday.
