Guard Shelley Smith is the fifth 2010 Texans draft pick to sign.
The Texans announced today that they have signed their sixth-round draft pick, guard Shelley Smith. Houston also signed a trio of free agents and released seven players.
Smith (6-4, 308) was selected with the 187th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Colorado State. Smith played in 36 games with 31 starts over four seasons for the Rams and earned All-Mountain West Conference honors following each of his last two seasons.
Smith is the fifth of the Texans nine draft picks to sign with the team, joining wide receiver Trindon Holliday, cornerback Sherrick McManis, defensive tackle Earl Mitchell and linebacker Darryl Sharpton.
Houston signed wide receiver Bobby Williams and fullback Justin Griffith, who both took part in this week's minicamp on a trial basis, and tight end Derek Fine.
Fine (6-3, 247) enters his third professional season after playing the last two years with the Buffalo Bills. Since being selected by the Bills in the fourth round (132nd overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, Fine has played in 18 games with 11 starts and has caught 19 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown.
Griffith (6-0, 230) has played for three teams in eight seasons, most recently with Seattle last season. In 13 games for the Seahawks in 2009, he rushed four times for six yards and caught 19 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. In his career, he has gained 413 yards on 94 carries with one touchdown and has caught 141 passes for 989 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Williams (6-2, 194) signed with Minnesota last season as an undrafted free agent out of North Alabama and went through the preseason with the Vikings. He saw action in all four preseason games a year ago and caught four passes for 61 yards in preseason play.
Houston waived rookies fullback Jack Corcoran, wide receiver London Crawford, guard Kristian Matte, linebacker Will Patterson, quarterback Tyler Sheehan and tackle Adam Ulatoski and released veteran tight end Michael Gaines.
