Celebrating Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, the Texans celebrated Black History Month by featuring local artists, community leaders and Black-owned businesses.

Cecil Shorts III joins the podcast to recap his February with the Texans, from experiencing the 2021 winter storm with seven kids, giving back in the Third Ward and what he learned this year during Black History month.

A Houston native, Michael Thomas has always been on the forefront of making the community around him a better place en route to his Walter Payton Man of the Year nomination. Thomas has focused on social justice issues and his approach has been two-fold, centering on advocacy and education while driving legislative change. In 2020, he created the unique design of the NFLPA's "END RACISM" pre-game warm-ups, organized a Texans players-only video calling for social justice reform and generated over $17,000 for HBCU scholarship funds by auctioning off special game memorabilia. Lastly, his annual free football camp, "Camp Mike T", is reflective of Thomas' dedication to empower young Houstonians while providing them with the additional resources to become impactful citizens in today's society.

Texans LB Jacob Martin and Legend ND Kalu joined Houston Police Department Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner, and teens from the Greater Houston Police Activities League (GHPAL) program for a virtual dialogue on social justice and relational policing. Teens had the opportunity to ask the panelists questions and engage in a meaningful conversation about policing. The mission of GHPAL is to reduce juvenile crime and violence through "relational policing" which includes building trusting relationships between youth, law enforcement and the community. This program is part of the Houston Texans commitment to strengthen relationships between youth and police officers through positive police and community interactions.

Janice, Cal and Hannah McNair discuss racism and social injustice with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. Turner shares his story of growing up in Houston, being bused across town to a primarily white school, and going on to earn his way to Harvard Law School. The four of them talked about the effect of George Floyd's death on the country, but more specifically the Houston community, the Black Lives Matter movement and how "this time is different."

Former Philadelphia Eagles Cornerback Roynell Young founded Pro-Vision Academy in 1990 as a way to help young students in Houston. Pro-Vision began as an afterschool program and has grown to a 3rd-12th grade state charter school with supplemental workforce and education programs to ensure college and career-readiness. Roynell Young has impacted more than 6,000 young people's lives in Houston.

In this episode of Conversations for Change, the McNair family and Romeo Crennel discuss Romeo's path in life and how he has paved the way for young black coaches in the NFL.

In honor of Black History Month, Texans Ambassadors and students saw a production of "Green Book" to spark discussion on social justice.

In July, 30 kids from the YMCA of Greater Houston took a trip with the Texans to Birmingham, Alabama to trace the path of the civil rights movement. The Houston Texans provided scholarships for students to participate in the Freedom Tour, part of $110,000 in donations made through the Houston Texans Social Justice fund.

The Houston Texans along with 25 juniors from Thurgood Marshall High School, visited Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern University.
